In the past few years, we've (finally) seen a wave of genuinely good video game adaptations after decades of soulless cash grabs. From the bright and bouncy Super Mario Bros. Movie to the gritty gut-punch of The Last of Us (well, Season 1 at least), plus the excellent Fallout series and surprisingly solid Sonic trilogy - it feels like video game adaptations are finally on the right track.
But for years, one video game movie reigned supreme. Everyone agreed it was objectively bad - but also kinda perfect. The original Mortal Kombat movie was cheesy, hokey, and campy in a way that felt like the actual game. And now, we're getting a sequel.
Yes, technically this is a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, not the glorious 90s version. But based on this new trailer? It's way closer in tone to that campy original than the overly gritty reboot. It's over the top. It's cheesy. It's funny. It's Mortal Kombat!
Karl Urban as a washed-out Johnny Cage is inspired casting. I do wish we finally got Michael Jai White as Jax, but hey - we're getting Noob Saibot.
This trailer is pure hype. Watch it below:
